Rating: - Basically good
Considering the price, these Xd200 heaphones are good. Mine cost under £20. I play a lot of old early sixties music. So I don't really need the sound to be too refined. Some of the sound quality on those early rock n roll recordings, was sometimes a bit harsh, a bit grainy. What I wanted, was a good, heavy base, without losing too much of the top end. I didn't want a thick, muddy base which swamped every thing else. And these phones do let you hear quite a good variety detail of the top end.
However, they are not perfect. For that price, not expected to be. My main niggle, is the lack of real definition when the switch is moved, from music to movies.
Overall, though, I thought they were good. The soundstage is reasonably presented, I did like the base, and I did like the presentation of the vocals, although, at times these can sound a little thin. They can also sound a tad `canny`, but certainly hasn't dectracted from the enjoyment of listening to most of the tracks I have played.
I do have one or two other headphones, which are more expensive, but for the type of music I play most, I am, at the moment, preferring the XD 200's. They do play loud, but without pulverising your ears. They do give a good, round thumping base line, they do provide reasonably good stero imaging. They are reasonably comfortable. And although big, the ear pads don't make the ears too hot.
Liked 'em.
Rating: - Unimpressive Sony Headphones
The MDR-XD200's cost me £20.00p and for the money you cannot complain too much. Yes, they are tinny as it states in one amazon comment, and they do lack bass, as in another. The EQ switch has no effect. Sadly though, there is nothing extraordinary here, hence little to excite the senses. I prefer far more bass but these are midrange with a poor base even when plugged into an amp. They are also uncomfortable. Sony could do better than this, meaning they could make them more comfortable and also add more bass. I would not purchase another pair. I would leave these alone and go for the Sennheiser HD465's as these are far superior in sound and comfort.
Rating: - Poor sound, poor headband
I bought these thinking Sony would be a good brand. But how wrong I was. First impressions were that they felt comfortable around the ears, but the headband really hurts after about an hour of use. My other first impression was that the sound quality was really, really bad - there is a distinct lack of being able to reproduce bass accurately. That was when I moved the EQ switch to check between Movie and Music. I am not sure that switch is connected to anything.
Rating: - Not that impressed really!
Big chunky pieces of empty plastic really. You'll get a slight improvement on bass with the 'music' 'movie' switch but it's a gimmick and not a good one at that. The bass is O.K. for the price, but the rest of the range suffers. It can handle a fair bit of volume. They may look big, chunky and impressive, but I'd pass if I were you! They may look like they weight a billion tons, but they weight less than Kate Moss!
Rating: - Excellent for mixing
I bought these yesterday in for almost twice the price in hmv, big mistake after looking at the price on here. so i tried using them with my ipod and to be honest they sounded quite tiny and i was quite disapointed. but then i plugged them into my mixer to b used with my turntable and they soun ded great, very warm with a good range. so i wouldnt recomend these with a cd player or ipod/mp3 but i strongly recomend using them with some kind of amp. great cans!
