Rating: - It Cleans your Records
I use this software infrequently, but when needed it does an excellent job.
I use it in two main ways; firstly to improve the sound of live recordings that I have made to tape over the years and which have degraded with time or were simply badly recorded in the first place. Secondly to "clean" the clicks and crackles from bootfair LPs which haven't responded to my record cleaning machine. Some of my own attempts to rescue a vinyl recording using "Clean" have come out much better than record company efforts to produce CDs of old recordings. The process is NOT quick. It takes me several hours of trial and error to get each track of an album optimised before processing, so this is not an option for simply converting a large record collection to CD.

I purchased Steinberg/Clean Version 5 over 2 years ago and have generally been very satisfied with what I, as a novice, have been able to achieve in cleaning up my records. However I have found that the basic Clean programme is very inefficient in "splitting" the tracks when a whole CD is recorded. For example the programme "clips" the end of one track and "adds" it to the start of the next which is very annoying. By using the WaveLab Lite facility however it is possible to start and end the tracks exactly where you want to and it is a far better programme, in my opinion, at cleaning the tracks and removing loud "clicks". I have also found that the Label Editor programme is useful for creating Jewel Case Labels, tracklists and CD labels but have encountered a problem in accurately calibrating my HP 940C printer to print the labels accurately onto the CD label sheet. This programme gives a calibration sheet which prints a simple "cross" and instructs you to accurately measure from the left hand side and top of the sheet and to enter the values. When I have done this no matter what values I enter, the cross is still printed in exactly the same place. I have tried going onto the Pinnacle website but discovered that they no longer seem to offer any support, nor mention, of Steinberg/Clean Version 5. This is extremely disappointing and frustrating, because although I think that the programme isn't particularly user friendly, especially for an old codger like myself, I have spent many ... Read More
