Amazon.co.uk Review: As the name implies, the Amstrad E-Mailer Plus is more than just a telephone--it's a multi-functional data communicator. With its bright LCD screen, full QWERTY keyboard and combining all the features of a hands-free telephone/digital answering machine with e-mail, Internet access, FAX and SMS text sending and more, the E-Mailer Plus packs a mean technology-filled punch. The E-Mailer plus also features a 700 entry address book, Smart Media Card slot for extra storage, a calculator and the facility for an optional databank mini organiser.
Ideally aimed at the novice or family without Internet access, the E-Mailer Plus is a good stepping-stone to full-blown Internet and e-mail access. It lacks the sophistication of surfing or e-mailing on a computer, but what it achieves considering its small size is rather good. When you first switch the unit in, you have to go through a registration process--without doing this, the E-Mailer is unusable (even as a phone). There must be continuous power to the E-Mailer for it to function. So, if you have a power cut it won't work--so keep a spare phone handy. It's also recommended that Caller display is enabled. Currently, BT charge £4.50/quarter for this service. This makes e-mail notification easier, and you can see who is calling.
E-mails, faxes and SMS messages are all typed using the pull-out QWERTY keyboard and the LCD screen is bright and easy to read. It is possible to set up up to eight Amserve e-mail addresses on one account. The E-Mailer Plus will also allow you to receive certain attachments such as JPG, GIF or BMP image files and WAV audio files. You can also forward e-mails to fax numbers and send e-mails to multiple recipients. Sending and receiving e-mails is very easy and a complete novice could start e-mailing the world within minutes of registering. Sending and receiving e-mails cost 12p plus local call charges per session. You can also attach a USB or Parallel printer to the unit--allowing you to print out messages.
The major problem with the E-Mailer Plus is the inability to save e-mails/faxes mid-way through writing. Surfing the Internet isn't the easiest thing to do as you have to scroll through all the hyperlinks on a page to get to the one you want. The manual is very comprehensive, and there is a handy quick start guide included which will prove invaluable for novice users. An added "bonus" feature of the E-Mailer Plus is the ability to download and play a selection of classic ZX Spectrum games such as Manic Miner and Chuckie Egg. The downside to this however is the fact that you have to pay 50p to rent the game for three days.
There is so much technology squeezed into this box, it's surprising it doesn't leak out over the table. The call charges and the inability to save e-mails or faxes as you go may put some people off, but for someone just wanting to e-mail every now and again, it's well worth the money. If you've got a family member who isn't yet connected to the Internet, this would make an ideal present as all that is required is a phone line. Overall, the E-Mailer Plus is a good all-round multi-function device that even granny would have fun with. --Martin Snelling
Rating: - Excellent Value, even with the premium calls
For the features of this phone, you could easily pay over £100 for one.
If you set the email call to once a week, the "extortionate" price becomes around 17p a week, about 50p a month. The call has a set charge, so if its connected for 15 seconds or 15 minutes (its never more that 30 seconds really) it still charges the same 17p. The call takes place very late at night so you cant complain about blocking the line really. Adverts are also downloaded in short free calls around this time.
On Amazon, these phones are about £35 used. Say you bought the phone without having to make the email call somehow, and say it cost £100 (very cheap, would likely be much more). You'd have to use the phone for nearly 11 years before its total charge is more than you saved.
Stop winging about premium calls, your getting a bargain.
Rating: - Great piece of kit
I would advise would-be purchasers of this product to ignore some of the negative comments shown in other reviews below, as this is a great piece of kit!
There's lots of room to store all your freinds info, including Home, mobile, work and fax numbers together with their full address and email adress in each record. Also, it's very easy to find a contact - you just start typing their name, while the emailer quickly sifts through the database to match an entry with your typing.
You can view the last 12 out-going calls on screen, as well as the last 12 in-coming, from which you can dial the highlighted call with one key-press.
There's a handy little querty keyboard that slides out which you can use for composing emails or adding addresses and telephone numbers.
The answerphone facility works well too, as it is stored on a chip - no waiting for the tape to wind to the right position to leave a message. You can also retrieve your voicemail remotely from another telephone.
I've had mine for a month or two now, it works well, and I have one of the little Pocket-Dock-it's to store all my numbers away from the device - a handy backup.
You don't have to use the email facility if you don't want to, but you do have to set one up to be able to keep using the appliance. While it is necessary to make 2 or 3 premium rate calls to set the thing up, after that you can choose how often you want to retrieve emails. The ... Read More

Rating: - DO NOT BUY IT!!
Avoid this phone like the plague!! I've had one for four months and so far it has added well over £100 on to my phone bill by automatically dialling out for email when it's set to manual dialling!! Also, you can't delete your email addresses to stop it from dialling out. Mine ended up in the bin!
Rating: - The Advert Phone
Amstrad E-Mailer Plus I've had my e-mailer for just over a month now, Great phone, BUT!!! The phone accepts adverts and there is nothing you can do about it, in fact it says on the box "from time to time advert will be sent to the e-mailer". From time to time NOT every day, 5 times a day, 7 days a week, from about 6:30am until 10:00pm. It doesn't cost you anything but who wants Ads FLASHING on the phone display all day long. If I could sum up in 2 worlds it would be KEEP AWAY.
